Book Binding with Elke Rittner - Ahokas

A beginners workshop that will teach you the basics of historical binding techniques which you can creatively adapt to a very contemporary outcome. We will also cover cross structure binding, some bookbinding history and different binding options. Techniques taught are totally reversible, no glues used.

Students need to bring the following materials to this week-end workshop:

cutting mat A4 or A5 size
stanley knife
steel ruler
scissors
Own book or paper to be bound

 

Elke's Profile

I’m a hard working bookbinder with extensive knowledge of industrial and traditional
bookbinding and printing techniques. My training, both locally and overseas, combined
with my work experience has equipped me to take on almost any situation.

Experience
Bookbinder, Elke’s Books — 2005 - ongoing
I run a small bindery focusing on exclusive hand-bound books.
Bookbinding Teacher, RMIT — 2006 - ongoing
I teach bookbinding on a casual basis at RMIT. In the next semester I am teaching the
“IBook repair and restoration” evening course.
Bindery Operator, Kwik Kopy Fitzroy — 1999 - 2000
Operated a Polar guillotine, folding machines and a Horizon collator. Being the only
bookbinder on premises enabled me to complete a wide range of a tasks with very tight
deadlines.
Apprentice Bookbinder, InColour(PMP printing) — 1995 - 1999
Completed a 4 year apprenticeship in Print Finishing and Bookbinding. Operated folding
machines (Stahl and MBO), assisted with general binding duties.

Enrolments

Places fill quickly. You are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. Reserve your place by ringing Rob Hails on (03) 9482 1605.

A $50 deposit will be required to secure an enrolment. Balance of Course Fee is payable no later than commencement of first class.

Refunds

A course fee refund will be given if:
  • A class in which you are enrolled is cancelled.
  • Notice of your withdrawal from a class is given at least 3 weeks in advance.
